Found an old piece of Oceans II letterhead, down on Atlantic. This specific piece of paper came from the late '90s. Who knows how long the logo predates that though. Thought it was a cool, nostalgic logo. I removed part of the phone number, but wanted to leave in Hampton Roads' old 804 area code.

young Cavalier

Cavalier under construction. 1926

Aerial shot of the Cavalier. 1927.
What I find interesting about this view, you can see that Atlantic, Pacific, and Holly were already established routes. And they remained basically unchanged for a hundred years. I think Atlantic was recently truncated in to a dead end (to create space for new buildings), but.. Even just a few years back,  Atlantic Avenue still followed this 1927 route.

There's a nice (mostly photo) book on the history of the Cavalier: The Cavalier. Reclaiming a Virginia Beach Icon. That's the source for the construction photo above. And the book has a lot of modern photos of the Cavalier's remodel.

Atlantic Ave apocrypha

Cool photo I saw recently of 1960s Atlantic Avenue. There were no recognizable landmarks to me, so I worked off the Roses department store sign (left 1/3rd of the pic)..

Apparently Roses was near the intersection of 19th & Atlantic. Some online research turned up this brief report from the 1963 Federal Register:
Rose's Stores Inc No 107 1904 Atlantic Avenue Virginia Beach Va effective 10-2 to 9-2 1964.. store 13 employees..

Another long gone spot on Atlantic, the old Seaside Amusement Park, formerly near Laskin & Atlantic. I think it survived in to the early/mid 8os (somebody email me if they remember exactly when it folded up). I remember the empty/vacated lot there for a while. And around 1992 it was being used as a temporary (indoor) ice skating rink if I remember right..
