the disappearance of Deryl Lane

Couple years ago I was wasting time looking thru old Virginia Beach phonebooks, and found an extinct street.. Deryl Lane. It was a small loop off the end of Little Neck Rd back in the day. This was the final listing I saw of Deryl's existence, 1978 city directory. By 1980, it had been absorbed in to Little Neck (which must've been connected to Virginia Beach Blvd, during 1978-79?)

This is where Deryl lane would have ended prior to the '80s. Looks like the city separated Deryl from Johnson St, with a sidewalk, & broadened the end of Johnson in to an enclosed court.. Lower, left corner of this photo is Little Neck Road, running south to VB Blvd.

early Princess Anne High School

Lining this up with a modern map, I think the thicker, vertical line (middle of the highlighted area) would be Caren Drive.. and the east-west line that cuts thru the word 'Malibu' is Edinburgh Dr.

Malibu neighborhood was constructed in the early 6os, with construction centered around Malibu Dr and the tropical streets Mango, Coconut, etc. In 1963 Malibu Elementary opened, the surrounding neighborhood reached it's peak of young families in 1974 (Malibu Elementary's largest recorded student body. Source 2018 Historic Architectural Resource Survey Update ).

Loehmann's Plaza' long gone Herman's World of Sporting Goods. 

Feb. 1983 article covering Loehmann's groundbreaking. Photo with Meyera Oberndorf, who would eventually have nearby Central Library bear her name. Other thing that sticks out to me, the pic documents the shopping center's correct name Loehmann's, while headline underneath inaccurately describes it as a non-possesive, singular Loehmann.

Two years later (Oct 85), opening of Herman's is announced. It was at the west end of strip mall.

In the 8os, Lynnhaven Mall originally had a brown tile look.. In the center was a fountain & modern art statue (Enigma).
Nobody seems to remember Enigma when I (pointlessly) reference it.

Ultra Vision Theatre that once inhabited a back corner of Pembroke Mall's parking lot..

Bottom of the photo depicts a similar theater built in Florida. I notice the ad generically refers to Pembroke's location as 'Norfolk, Virginia' (instead of it's accurate location in VB). Guess Norfolk had more national recognition at the time..

They also had a summer tradition of showing kinda second-run kids' movies..

I believe the theater (their spelling was theatre, but..) was bulldozed in the late '80s, and replaced by theaters inside Pembroke. The last reference I found to it's existence, was controversy surrounding their potential showing of the Last Temptation of Christ (Sept 7, 1988 Daily Press).
